Creating a book is a wonderful goal. You position yourself as an author in your field, it gives you recognition, and it's a space where you can showcase your expertise and reach a wide audience. There's just one problem: you know a lot about the subject you're writing about, but you have no idea on how to design, publish and distribute a book. You may have tried working with publishers without much success, or you haven't done so because you don't know where to start and you feel that making an investment with a designer won't ensure the book's success.
I understand these fears, so I put forward the following questions to you, so you can decide for yourself what's best:
Learning editorial design on your own can be a long and frustrating process, especially if you want to do it for free and not in an institution or course that gives you a path. On the other hand, partnering with a traditional publisher has great advantages such as their marketing capabilities, but you will only keep 10% (print copies) or 20%-25% (for digital copies) of your book's profits.... Is that what you want?
Don't you think you would have a better chance of keeping a higher profit margin by having the full percentage of sales on your work if you hire someone to take care of the book design; either just for the front cover, back cover or inside pages, or to do a complete advertising campaign to accompany your product?
Also, wouldn't it be a safer bet to do your book's design by hiring the services of an award-winning designer with proven experience, than with a design done in fiverr or 99designs that won't guarantee any matching towards your branding communication AND target audience?
You have written a book: a business book, a novel, a poetry book, a playful book or maybe an educational or science outreach book; or you have decided to create a magazine. You are considering hiring someone to help you with the design. The only problem is that you don't know if the book will sell.
What kind of people read the stuff that is already being done on your topic? What is the profile of the people who consume this type of content? Are they highly educated people, young people just out of college, or are they people in the business world? Are they teenagers or older adults? The more accurate you are with this information, the easier it will be to find them and sell them your written work with a book design that appeals to them. Need some help with the strategy? Keep scrolling.
There are, in general, two strategies for marketing your book. Each one serves a different type of writer and needs:
In this strategy you worry about producing a lot of content, reserving your unpublished writings to be sent to contests and actively participating in contacting large publishers that allow you to publish under their signature and ensure you marketing and publicity channels. Thus, you don't worry about selling the book to focus on the production of your writings. This strategy is particularly valuable if you consider yourself an introvert.
The downside of this strategy is that, in most cases, your percentage of profit on the sale of each book is less than 30%.
Does this sound unfair, since you were the creator of the content? If you've chosen this strategy, it's not me you should be consulting with, but your publisher. However, if you feel that my work connects with your written content, tell your publisher about me and let's work together on your book design! You can license my photographs for commercial use in your book, or commission me for specific photo illustrations.
You don't like this route? Then you should think about investing some of your time and money in designing and advertising your book yourself. Fortunately, in there are very viable strategies for doing this.
Do you already have a blog, a YouTube channel, an Instagram or Twitter with many followers or some kind of material that has made you known to an audience? Are you a speaker, teacher or are you in a profession where you manage relatively large audiences? If the answer is no, do you have a network of friends or acquaintances who do have these characteristics, with whom you can partner to reach agreements on the sale of your book? If the answer to all three questions is no, perhaps you should ask yourself if it is the right time to invest in book design, or if you prefer the classic strategy.
If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, then we can work together. Having a book will give you several advantages: it will be a passive source of income for you as a content creator, and it will establish you as a writer in your niche, allowing you to connect with your audience in a more meaningful way.
My services are ideal for people who already have an audience, but have no idea about design, and want a book that visually captivates and differentiates itself from others in the market.
